Vacation Placement Scheme 2008
The placement scheme is now full for 2008, but please fill in a form if you wish to take part in 2009.
Greyhound Plant Services, are now on the third year of their scheme whereby engineering or related undergraduates are given the opportunity to work on live construction sites during their summer vacation.
All health and safety, and plant operation training is provided, enabling
candidates to qualify for a CITB CPCS operator’s card - the nationally
recognised standard for safe plant operation. The scheme was piloted for two
students in 2006 who have written up their experiences for us.

In 2007, six students took part in what was a successful scheme. In 2008 we are aiming to increase the number of students that we take on.
What’s involved?
- 10 days training ideally in Easter vacation 2008 , exams permitting; or early June 2008
- Working on site during summer vacation
The site could be anywhere in the UK, and a lodging allowance is paid should you have to live away from home.
What do you get?
- Basic pay (national minimum wage) while training, then full wage based on hours worked on site
- CITB CPCS Operator’s card
- Valuable experience in an industry related to your degree.
What we need from you:
- engineering undergraduate;
- driving licence;
- able to work nationwide, prepared to lodge near site;
- available for 10 days paid training at Easter, then at least 8 weeks in the summer for work on site;
- must be over 18;
- must be available for interview during February 2007.
Selection of operators: Operators should be reasonably fit and free of physical
or mental defects that may pose a threat to their own health and safety,
or that of others. Disabled persons must not be excluded if they can demonstrate
capability with in this criteria.
Operators should have:
- sufficient movement of limbs and co-ordination to enable proper control of plant and equipment;
- a level of vision enabling judgement of space and distance with normal peripheral vision. If glasses or contact lenses are necessary they must be used at all times when operating plant and equipment;
- an ability to hear instructions and audible warning signals. Operators with an audible disability must use a prescribed hearing aid at all times when operating machinery.
What you can expect from us:
- pay whilst training at the national minimum wage;
- average earnings last year while working were £400 per week;
- health and safety training qualification;
- DVLA health and safety test;
- two weeks training on operating plant near Oswestry, Shropshire;
- random drug testing;
- CITB CPCS card;
- employment driving plant on live sites anywhere in the country.
